Could

'Could' का प्रयोग 'can' के भूतकाल के रूप में किया जाता है। 'Could' एक Modal सहायक क्रिया है जो क्षमता, अनुमति, अनुरोध, प्रस्ताव या कार्यों की संभावना व्यक्त करना, कुछ पूछने या सुझाव देने को व्यक्त करता है। 'Could' अधिक विनम्र लगता है और सकारात्मक प्रतिक्रिया की उम्मीद दर अधिक है।

'Could' is used as the past tense of can. It is a modal auxiliary verb which expresses ability, permission, request, offer or possibility of actions, to ask or suggest something. Could sounds more polite and the expectation rate of positive response is higher.

Points to remember:

Could' का रूप नहीं बदलता है, इसलिए थर्ड पर्सन की एकवचन फॉर्म 's/es' से समाप्त नहीं होता है। जैसे :	Could does not change its form, so the third person singular form does not end in ‘-s’.
वह समय के अंदर सभी प्रश्नों का उत्तर दे सका था।	He could answer all the questions within time.
आख़िरकार कल नीता अपनी मां को मिल सकी।	Neeta could visit her mother yesterday finally.
'Could' का नकारात्मक रूप 'could not' है और लघु रूप 'couldn't' है। जैसे :	The negative form of could is, 'could not' and the short form is 'couldn't'. e.g. :

अंकित इस बार अपना वोट नहीं दे सका।	Ankit couldn't cast his vote this time.
सपना साक्षात्कार (इंटरव्यू) के अंतिम दौर के लिए सफलता नही प्राप्त कर पाई।	Sapna couldn't qualify for the final round of interview.
Could' भूतकाल में संभावना जो घटित हो सकती थी, कल्पना या सुझाव देने के लिए इस्तेमाल किया जाता है, लेकिन अगर हम यह कहना चाहते हैं कि कोई व्यक्ति वास्तव में कुछ करने में सफल हुआ है तब हम will/was/were able to का प्रयोग करते हैं। जैसे :	Could is used in the past tense to refer to a possibility of what might have happened, imagining or suggesting, but if we want to say that someone actually succeeded in doing something we use will/was/were able to. e.g. :
सेना बाढ़ के पानी से प्रभावित नदी पर पुल का निर्माण करने में सक्षम हुई।	The army was able to construct a bridge over the flooded river.
सैनिक प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में आवश्यक सामान ले जाने में आपूर्ति सक्षम हुई।	The soldiers were able to take the supplies to the affected regions.
