Uses of Should / Ought to
Look at the following examples:
| तुम्हें अपनी पुरानी कार बदल लेनी चाहिये। (सलाह) | You ought to change your old car. (Advice) |
| तुम्हें अपनी पुरानी कार बदल लेनी चाहिये। (सलाह) | You should change your old car. (Advice) |
| यह सूप गरम नही है। तुम्हें इसे वापस करना चाहिये। (सलाह) | This soup is not hot. You should send it back. (Advice) |
| यह सूप गरम नही है। तुम्हें इसे वापस करना चाहिये। (सलाह) | This soup is not hot. You ought to send it back. (Advice) |
| क्या मुझे अपना पैसा शेयर बाजार में निवेश करना चाहिए? (सलाह) | Should I invest my money in share market? (Advice) |
| शिल्पा को स्वयं को व्यस्त रखनें के उपाय खोजने का प्रयास करना चाहिए। | Shilpa ought to try and find ways to keep herself occupied. |
| चक्रवात चेतावनी के कारण समुद्रतट के पास के इलाकों को खाली करने के आदेश उन्हें दे देने चाहिए। | They should order for the evacuation of the areas near the shore due to the cyclone warning. |
| क्या मुझे उसे एक सामान्य चिकित्सक या फिर एक विशेषज्ञ के पास ले जाना चाहिए? | Should I take her to a general physician or a specialist? |
| समीक्षाएं बहुत अच्छी हैं, आपको निश्चित रूप से इस मूवी को देखना चाहिए। | The reviews are great; you should surely watch this movie. |
| क्या आपको अपने बच्चे को वरिष्ठ बाल रोग विशेषज्ञ डॉक्टर मेहता को नहीं दिखाना चाहिए? | Shouldn't you show your child to senior paediatrician Dr Mehta? |
| क्या आपको नहीं लगता कि हमें अपने नवीनीकरण के काम के लिए पेशेवर सलाह लेनी चाहिए? | Don't you think we ought to seek professional advice for our renovation work? |
| आपको अपने पड़ोसियों से लड़ाई नहीं करनी चाहिए। | You should not fight with your neighbours. |
| आपको अपने पड़ोसियों से लड़ाई नहीं करनी चाहिए। | You ought not to fight with your neighbours. |
नैतिक दायित्व / कर्तव्य: विशेष स्थिति में सही काम किए जाने को इंगित करने के लिए Should/Ought to का उपयोग किया जा सकता है। जो चीजें नैतिक रूप से सही हैं और इसलिए उनका अनुसरण किया जाना अधिक वांछनीय है। यहां भी 'Should' और Ought to' को इंटरचेंज्ड किया जा सकता है, लेकिन याद रखना चाहिए कि 'ought to' का उपयोग 'should' के मुकाबले अधिक मजबूती के लिए किया जाता है। कहा जाता है कि दैनिक बातचीत में 'should' अधिक उपयोग किया जाता है क्योंकि यह अधिक अनुकूलनीय शब्द है।
Moral Obligation/Duty: 'Should and Ought to' can be used to point out the correct things to be done in a particular situations. Things which are morally correct and hence more desirable to be followed. Here also 'should and ought to' can be interchanged but remember that 'Ought to' is used to imply more forcefulness than 'Should'. Having said that in daily conversations 'Should' is used more frequently as it is a more adaptable word.
Look at the following examples:
| हमें अपने बड़ों का आदर करना चाहिये। (कर्तव्य) | We should respect our elders. (Duty) |
| हमें अपने बड़ों का आदर करना चाहिये। (कर्तव्य) | We ought to respect our elders. (Duty) |
| हमें जरूरतमंदों की मदद करनी चाहिये। (नैतिक दायित्व) | We ought to help needy people. (Moral obligation) |
| आपको कम से कम सप्ताहंत अपने बुजुर्ग माता-पिता के साथ व्यतीत करना चाहिए। | You should spend weekends at least with your elderly parents. |
| क्या रोहन को नियमों के खिलाफ खेलने से हमें नही रोकना चाहिए? | Shouldn't we stop Rohan from playing against rules? |
| आपके पति आपसे उन्हें सुनने के लिए निवेदन कर रहे थे, आपको उन्हें सुनना चाहिए था। | Your husband was begging you to listen to him; you should have listened. |
| उन्हें बात करने से पहले सोचना चाहिए, आख़िर उनकी छवि सार्वजनिक है। | He ought to think before talking after all he is a public figure. |
| क्या मुझे जाना चाहिए और अपनी गलती के लिए अपने भाई से माफी मांगनी चाहिए? | Ought I go and apologise to my brother for my mistake? |
