Degrees of Adjectives

Rule 2

जब एक सकारात्मक विशेषण के अंत में दो व्यंजन आए (Tall)और जब सकारात्मक विशेषण एक व्यंजन के साथ समाप्त हो लेकिन इससे तुरंत पहले दो स्वर लगातार आए तो (Great), तो विशेषण के अंत में सकारात्मक डिग्री बनाने के लिए अंत में 'er' जोड़ें और सकारात्मक डिग्री बनाने के लिए 'est' जोड़ें।

When two consonants come at the end of a positive adjective (Tall) and when the positive adjective ends with a consonant but two vowels come immediately before it (Great), add 'er' to the end of the adjective to create a positive degree and 'est' to make a positive degree.

Look at the following examples:

Positive form Comparative form Superlative form
Chill Chiller Chillest
Small Smaller Smallest
Cold Colder Coldest
Rich Richer Richest
Great Greater Greatest
Cheap Cheaper Cheapest
Sweet Sweeter Sweetest
Weak Weaker Weakest

डिग्री के सही उपयोग पर महारत हासिल करने का सबसे अच्छा तरीका एक डिग्री से दूसरे में परिवर्तित वाक्य को पढ़ना और अभ्यास करना है।

The best way to master correct usage of degrees of comparison is reading and practising converting sentences from one degree to another. Let's look at the following Positive, Comparative and Superlative sentences :

ये झुमके आपके तुलना में बड़े हैं। These earrings are bigger than yours.
ये झुमके सबसे बड़े हैं। These earrings are the biggest.
रोहन की पतंग अजय के जितनी ही उँची उड़ रही थी। Rohan's kite was flying as high as Ajay's.
रोहन की पतंग अजय की से अधिक उँची उड़ रही थी। Rohan's kite was flying higher than Ajay's.
