Direct-Indirect Speech - Simple Sentences

Rule No. 5

Reporting Verb के टेन्स को देखें और यदि यह एक Past Tense है, तो Indirect Speech में Reported Speech का टेन्स निम्नलिखित नियम के अनुसार Past Tense में बदला जाता है:

Look at the Tense of the Reporting Verb and If it is a Past Tense, then the Tense of the Reported Speech in Indirect Speech is changed to Past Tense according to the following Rule:

Tense of Reported Speech in Direct Speech Tense will change to____ in the Indirect Speech Example: Direct Speech Example: Indirect Speech
Simple Present Simple Past She said, "I am a writer." She said that she was a writer.
Present Indefinite Past Indefinite She said, "I write a letter." She said that she wrote a letter.
Present Continuous Past Continuous She said, "I am writing a letter." She said that she was writing a letter.
Present Perfect Past Perfect She said, "I have written a letter." She said that she had written a letter.
Present Perfect Continuous Past Perfect Continuous She said, "I have been writing a letter for two hours." She said that she had been writing a letter for two hours."
Past Indefinite Past Perfect She said, "She wrote a letter." She said that she had written a letter.
Past Continuous Past Perfect Cont. She said, "I was writing a letter." She said that she had been writing a letter.
Past Perfect No change of Tense She said, "I had written a letter." She said that she had written a letter.
Past Perfect Continuous No change of Tense She said, "I had been writing a letter for two hours." She said that she had been writing a letter for two hours."
Will/Shall in Future Tense Would/ Should (Should with Pronoun 'I' & 'We' only) She said, "I shall write a letter." She said that she should write a letter.
Can Could She said, "I can write a letter." She said that she could write a letter.
May Might She said, "I may write a letter." She said that she might write a letter.
Could/ Should/ Would/ Might No Change She said, "I would write a letter." She said that she would write a letter.
