Difference between 'A' and 'An'
| Use of Article 'An' | ||
| 4 | एकवचन गणनीय संज्ञा से पहले जो स्वर अक्षर से शुरू होती है और स्वर ध्वनि से ही बोली जाती है। | Before a singular countable noun that begins with a vowel letter and is spoken by a vowel sound. |
| Examples: an apple, an army, an elephant, an eye, an ear, an orange, an umbrella, an ugly truth | ||
| 5 | एकवचन गणनीय संज्ञा से पहले जो व्यंजन अक्षर से शुरू होती है लेकिन स्वर ध्वनि से बोली जाती है। | Before a singular countable noun that begins with a consonant letter but is spoken by a vowel sound. |
| Examples: an M.P., an M.L.A., an M.Tech., an SHO, etc. (In case of its full form, we will write 'A' like a Member of Parliament for an M.P.) | ||
| 6 | एकवचन गणनीय संज्ञा से पहले जो अक्षर 'H' से शुरू होती है, जहां 'H' मौन रहता है और शब्द स्वर ध्वनि के साथ बोला जाता है। | Before a singular countable noun that begins with the letter 'h', where 'h' remains silent and the word is spoken with a vowel sound. |
| Examples: an hour, an honest, an heir, an honourable post, an honorarium, etc | ||
Note: 'A' और 'An' का प्रयोग केवल Singular Countable Noun के साथ होता है. 'A' and 'An' are used only with Singular Countable Noun.
Uses of 'A/An'
Look at the following to understand the use of Articles - A/N
| 1 | हम Singular Countable Noun से पहले A/An का उपयोग करते हैं (Noun जिसे हम गिन सकते हैं)। | We use A/An before a Singular Countable Noun (a Noun that we can count). |
| Examples: An Artist, a doctor, a boy, a dog, an umbrella. | ||
| 2 | हम एकवचन संज्ञा से पहले A/An का उपयोग करते हैं। हम बहुवचन संज्ञा से पहले इसका उपयोग नहीं करते हैं। | We use A/An before a singular noun. We do not use it before a plural noun. |
| Examples: A book' is correct, 'a books' is incorrect because the word 'books' is plural. | ||
| 3 | हम एक Proper Noun से पहले A/An का उपयोग नहीं करते हैं, लेकिन जब यह स्पीकर के लिए अज्ञात होता है, तो हम Proper Noun के लिए भी '/ An का उपयोग करते हैं। | We do not use A/An before a proper noun, but when it is unknown for the speaker, we use 'A/An for the proper noun also. |
| Examples: This book is written by a Rajeev Kumar (Here Rajeev Kumar is an unknown person for the speaker). | ||
| 4 | हम विस्मयकारी वाक्यों में कुछ शब्दों (what/such) के बाद A/An का उपयोग करते हैं। | We use A/An after certain words (what/such) in exclamatory sentences. |
| Examples: What a scene, What a lovely boy, Such a big hall. | ||
| 5 | हम प्रोफेशन से पहले A/An का उपयोग करते हैं। | We use A/An before professions. |
| Examples: She is a teacher, He is an engineer, He is a manager, Ram is an MP. | ||
| 6 | हम A/An का उपयोग तब करते हैं जब हम किसी का प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तियों की विशेषताओं या व्यक्तित्व की उपमा से परिचय कराते हैं। | We use A/An when we introduce someone by features or personality of important/famous persons. |
| Examples: He is a Dara Singh of our colony, She is a Hitler, She is a Lata Mangeshkar of our college. | ||
| 7 | हम उस क्रिया से पहले A/An का उपयोग करते हैं जिसे वाक्य में संज्ञा के रूप में उपयोग किया जाता है। | We use A/An before a verb which is used as a noun in a sentence. |
| Examples: We go for a walk daily, We had a long discussion, She wants to have a bath. | ||
